Chronology (Brief summary)

The traditional San Telmo meatpacking plant in Mar del Plata, which was solely dedicated to meat exports, permanently closed on March 15, 2001, due to the damage caused by the ban on Argentine products entering international markets, leaving 300 workers unemployed.

Sadowa SA is an exporting company that in 1997 managed to recover the San Telmo meatpacking plant, after more than five years of crisis. In recent times, it had obtained new international markets.

In 1999, they were the main Argentine exporter to Canada, ranking among the top five exporters in the country to all destinations, but it was of no use because at that time there was not even a coherent health policy, and everything fell apart.

The Foot-and-Mouth Disease

In 1990, a plan to control foot-and-mouth disease was launched in Argentina, and SENASA was designated as the responsible agency for controlling and eradicating the disease. On May 30, 1997, the International Committee and the International Office of Epizootics (OIE) declared Argentina free of foot-and-mouth disease through vaccination.

This means that there is recognition of the concern to control the disease and that vaccination is preventive. In order to maintain this status, no sick animals can appear for at least two years.
